DMM - Import and analysis of Kamusi
From OmegaWiki
The Kamusi project is the best resource on the Internet on the Swahili language. It is a collaborative project by people from all over the world. The project includes several dictionaries:
- English-Swahili Dictionary
- Swahili-English Dictionary
- Swahili Specialized Vocabularies
- Russian-Swahili-Russian Dictionaries (compiled by Dmitri Polikanov)
It is a truly awesome project and it is really sad that this important project ran out of money. It is of real relevance that Yale University has given permission to Martin Benjamin, the editor of Kamusi, to use the Kamusi dictionary under a Free and or an Open license. Martin is preparing a new African dictionary project called PALDO.

[edit] DMM - Import and analysis of Kamusi
The aim of this Donations project is in two parts; import and analysis
[edit] Analysis of Kamusi and Import
The content of the Kamusi project is to be converted into an OmegaWiki format and, it is to be imported into an Authoritative Database. Meta information provided in the Kamusi content has to be mapped to information specific to the Swahili, the English and Russian language. The data that is used for the import has to be enriched with the DefinedMeaning number that is associated with the newly created content.
[edit] Analysis for an OmegaWiki - PALDO interface
Work will be done both in the OmegaWiki and in the PALDO project on this content. The concepts of Kamusi will get connected to translations in many other languages in OmegaWiki. Within PALDO the Swahili content will get connected to some 20 African languages.
In this part of this DMM project, we are looking for a method that will signal updates in OmegaWiki to the PALDO project for consideration. This may lead to improvements in PALDO that should lead back to the created Authorised Database.
[edit] Status of this project
As the content of the Kamusi project is available to us, we are looking for someone who is willing to work on this import. One of the technical guys at Open Progress is to give a price estimate for this project.
