The current definition, "The motion of air relative to the earth's surface; usually means horizontal air motion, as distinguished from vertical motion" makes an unnecessary distinction between horizontal and vertical winds. The Wikipedia article on wind does not make such a distinction [1]. The Wiktionary definition seems better:

"Real or perceived movement of atmospheric air usually caused by convection or differences in air pressure."
  • The wind blew through her hair as she stood on the deck of the ship.
  • As they accelerated onto the motorway, the wind tore the plywood off the car's roof-rack.
  • The winds in Chicago are fierce.
