"Clann" does not mean "family". The normal word for "family" is "teaghlach", as in the Scottish Gaelic OmegaWiki. "Clann" means "progeny", and is a collective noun which most usually translates to English as "children" or "descendants". "Clann" does not translate "family" outside of the English special case "They had no family" ie. no children.
