What is a SynTrans[edit]

A SynTrans is one particular DefinedMeaning of one particular expression. Expressed differently, the association of one word with one definition is a SynTrans.

Examples[edit]

For example, let's consider "mouse".

  • "mouse" is an expression E1 (i.e. the five letter word m-o-u-s-e in English)
  • There are (at least) two definitions of "mouse" in English:
    • "an animal", this concept is one DefinedMeaning D1
    • "a device", this concept is another DefinedMeaning D2

In that case, we have the following SynTrans:

  1. A first SynTrans S1 is the association of the expression E1 with the DefinedMeaning D1
  2. A second SynTrans S2 is the association of the expression E1 with the DefinedMeaning D2
  3. If we consider that "computer mouse" is a second expression E2, then we have a third SynTrans S3 which is the association of the expression E2 with the DefinedMeaning D2.

SynTrans annotations[edit]

Some annotations are defined on a SynTrans level. This means that a word associated with two different definitions can have two different annotations.

This is the case for IPA (pronunciation). For example the English word lead is pronunced differently whether it relates to the metal element "lead" or to the verb "to lead" as a leader.

In other languages with genders, a word can take several genders according to its meaning. This is the case for the French "mousse" or the German "Band" or "See".
