How to edit the dictionary entries

Hi, and welcome to the project. Since you accessed this page it is likely that you are completely new to OmegaWiki and so let me guide you through the registration process, the creation of the Babel templates etc up to the "how to edit the entries".

[edit] Creating an account and logging in
OmegaWiki is in pre-alpha state and therefore, even though it is a wiki, we give new users edit rights manually. In future this will not be needed, but for now, that is how we need to do things, as the software is still under development.
So the first step is to create you an account. In the upper right corner you find a link that says Create an account or log in. Please click on it.
You reach a page where you have some boxes to be filled out:
- Username:
- Password:
- Retype password:
- Email:
- Real name:
Then there is the checkbox Remeber me and the buttons Log in, Create new account and Mail me a new password.
This is what you need to do:
- After Username: please insert the user name people should be able to see. This may be your own name or a made-up name.
- Type your password into the textbox next to Password:
- Type it once more in the textbox next to Retype password:.
- Next to Email: you can insert your e-mail address, but are not under any obligation to do so. No other user will be able to see it, it allows you to get notifications, and it allows other users to contact you by using the Email this user link.
- Next to Real name: you can insert your real name. Again, this is not mandatory.
- If you want to automatically login each time you access OmegaWiki you must activate the Remember me checkbox. Nonetheless sometimes you will find that you need to login, but not so often as if you did not check this box.
- Once you have filled in all the necessary data please click on Create new account.
You alrady hav an account?
Well, then you only need to fill in Username: and Password: and click on Log in.
[edit] Editing your user page
In the right upper part you see various links:
- <your user name>
- my talk
- preferences
- my watchlist
- my contributions
- log out
Your user name is in red if you just created your account. By clicking on it you get the edit window for your user page. Here you have your space where you can write about hobby, work and whatever you want to tell us. One thing needed on this user page is your Babel-template.
[edit] The Babel template
The babel template on OmegaWiki is needed so that we know which languages you speak - and if possible on which level. I'd say it is the first line you should add to your user page - in that way it will always show up on the right side at top.
Now how is that strange thingie created? Let's assume you are of English mother tongue, speak Swedish almost like a native and have basic knowledge in Portuguese. This would mean "three languages", right?
So what you are going to write on your user page is this:

What does all that stuff mean?
- {{: opens the template.
- Babel-3: indicates that you are going to have three colored boxes
- eng: stands for English native speaker
- swe-4: stands for Swedish near native knowledge
- por-1: stands for basic knowledge of Portuguese
- }}: closes the template
Of course your next question now is: How do I know which codes I have to use for my languages... Well, yes, considering that there are more than 7000 languages on earth, that is not an easy task. Many languages already have their own portal and also the Babel templates ready for use -- others don't.
You can get an overview of the present Babel templates by having a look at the page Babel (if you are a newbie to wikis: just click on the link and you will reach the page). Search for your language name and you will see the three letter language code that corresponds to the ISO 639-3 language code.
Another way of searching is what is there is going to the Main Page. On the bottom of the page you see a section called Portals for languages (to be constructed): - just click on the language name you are interested in and you will see a page where you have the mentioning of Ethnologue and beneath it the ISO 639-2 and 639-3 codes. The one you need to pick is the ISO 639-3 code.
If you have more languages just substitute the 3 with the number of languages you need and separate the list with a "|".
[edit] How to edit the entries
For those concerned with English, please read Editing relational data. Of course also all others can do this. If you still have questions on how to create new DefinedMeanings, please tell us.
For those who want to quick-start adding translations of definitions and words, please find here a short description on how to do things.
For the OLPC project you will get a link of a group of words to work on. Since we are working also on the English definitions, over time these lists will change and things will need further attention.
But for now, let's see how to go ahead:
- Click on the provided link - example: OLPC Children's Dictionary/DefinedMeaning packages/0000040 - so that would be the group you work on. Let's say you work on Italian translations and you are the first one to go over this group.
- One of the words in this group is DefinedMeaning:before (8161)
- Click on DefinedMeaning:before (8161)
- Above the contents you see the following tabs:
- Article
- Discussion
- Edit
- History
- Protect
- Delete
- Move
- Watch
- Click on Edit
- The exact meanings are shown. Now please go down one by one translating or proof-reading the definitions and the single words. Add any synonyms.
- To add a translation of the definition please go to the empty definition field. On its left hand side you find a drop down box. From there choose your language clicking on the drop-down menu and entering the first letter of the language you want to add. *Choose the language out of the list (should you need a language that is not there, please let us know).
- Type the translation of the definition in the empty box
- Go to the end of the page
- And click on save
- To add a translation of the term go to the end of the already translated words
- Choose the language like described above
- Type the translation of the term into the empty box
- Save the entered term
- by clicking on Save at the end of the page or
- by simply pressing the enter (return) key
Once you are through the complete list - for example: OLPC Children's Dictionary/DefinedMeaning packages/0000040
- Click on edit in the bar above the page itself
- Add the template that shows that this page was done - for example, if you were the first person going through this page by adding Italian translations you add {{OLPC-ita-1-done}}. Like you can see, also here we use the ISO 639-3 language code.
- Should you be the second or third person working on these articles for a given language, please ament the template accordingly. *Example for being the 3rd person having worked on German: {{OLPC-deu-3-done}}
- Save the page by clicking on Save page at the end of the page.
