Bug: Two Defined Meanings for the same language[edit]

Two Defined Meanings for the same language is rendered incorrectly.

The Hungarian bor has 2 defined meanings English leather and skin. These are incorrectly rendered together (see [1]), and an empty (see [2]). The same applies to the Bulgarian translation Кожа.

This is probably a general bug, other example tekstil (fabric / textile). HenkvD 14:27, 14 April 2006 (CEST)

Definitions duplicated after adding second translated definition of DefinedMeaning[edit]

Today I translated the definition of dricksvatten into Swedish. After I had done so, GerardM translated the same definition into Dutch. After this second edit, the definitions appear twice on AFAICT all Expressions associated with the DefinedMeaning in question, even after a SHIFT-RELOAD.--Sannab 11:50, 2 May 2006 (CEST)

I tested by translating regnvatten too, and asking GerardM to translate it, but not from regnvatten but from the Dutch Expression regenwater. This did not trigger the bug, so it seems to possibly be related to editing from the very same Expression.--Sannab 11:58, 2 May 2006 (CEST)
Further test, repeatedly editing the same translation of a definition, does not seem to trigger the bug.--Sannab 12:23, 2 May 2006 (CEST)

Looks like this was a rendering issue that now has been solved PeterJanRoes 16:45, 1 June 2006 (CEST)

Identical meanings (feature request)[edit]

Currently the information on whether or not an Expression is a good match or not for the DefinedMeaning is neither shown nor editable on an already created Expression. It seems to me allowing editability of this specific field would be a good first step for editable Expressions, while the information not being shown might be equated with a minor bug. --Sannab 13:03, 2 May 2006 (CEST)

The version of 31/5 has the feature "Identical meaning" flag is shown. Editability on this flag as on the translation is not possible yet. HenkvD 20:52, 1 June 2006 (CEST)

Existing synonym/translation shows as red link in list[edit]

I created two synonyms at the same time: http://epov.org/wd-gemet/index.php/Expression:acceptabelt_dagligt_intag_ and http://epov.org/wd-gemet/index.php/Expression:ADI-v%C3%A4rde. The first synonym erronously got a space at the end, which might be what is causing the problem. There is an article (http://epov.org/wd-gemet/index.php/Expression:acceptabelt_dagligt_intag), but in the translations list I get a red link (http://epov.org/wd-gemet/index.php?title=Expression:acceptabelt_dagligt_intag&action=edit). Following the first link (with the space in the end) gives me the correct DefinedMeaning, but on a red/nonexisting article page. Some sort of trimming of the space seems to have happened, but not everywhere?--Sannab 10:19, 3 May 2006 (CEST)

recerca scientifica[edit]

I created this page by adding the Neapolitan equivalent and def to one of the other pages with a similar DefinedMeaning. The link created remains red as does the article page (http://epov.org/wd-gemet/index.php?title=Expression:recerca_scientifica&rcid=9103) when you go there (it seems to have not "taken", that is), all the info is there, the page just doesn't seem "complete". Appears to be an extra underscore at the end causing all the ruckus.E. abu Filumena 05:06, 12 May 2006 (CEST)

Sorting in categories[edit]

When we use the Attention template, they are all under the W. For the sorting it makes better sense to not consider the name of the Namespace. GerardM 10:22, 3 May 2006 (CEST)

I modified the template to sort on {{PAGENAME}}, but the update solving the problem with categories included by templates seems not to have reached WiktZ yet. This means that existing articles with the template need a null edit to be sorted correctly. Newly added Attention templates should be fine.--Sannab 10:36, 3 May 2006 (CEST)
Null edits have been applied to existing articles, they should now show up under the pagename, not the namespace.--Sannab 10:48, 3 May 2006 (CEST)

Historial in GEMET namespace[edit]

I made my first edit this afternoon and when I looked for it tonight, I couldn't find it in "my contributions". In the history, I found just one edit [3]. The entry is Expression:mujer. Perhaps it is because I have my settings in Spanish. --Alhen 07:18, 4 May 2006 (CEST)

It is more likely to be because it is a pre-alpha version of the software. GerardM 07:40, 4 May 2006 (CEST)

Same problem, I made a few edit today (you can check them in the recentchanges) but they do not appear in my comtributions (only edit on my user page seems to appear there) and neither in the history of the page. I hope it will be fixed in a next version of the software :-) --Berto 14:28, 4 May 2006 (CEST)

The software does as yet not support history for changes in definitions and translation/synonyms. This is the main reason why editing is restricted, there is no way to revert.--Sannab 14:33, 4 May 2006 (CEST)

Edits do not show in Recent Changes[edit]

Since the last software update, edits of relational data in the Expression namespace do not show up in Recent Changes anymore. For example I added a German definition and a relation to Expression:Bodendenkmal. Neither my changes nor subsequent edits by others are shown in Recent Changes. --Tosca 18:33, 1 June 2006 (CEST)

drop down selection list and non-ascii letters[edit]

I just encountered a problem with selecting another DefinedMeaning for a new Relation I was creating. The DefinedMeaning I wanted to associate with Expression:vidare begrepp (Expression:broader terms) was Expression:snävare begrepp (Expression:narrower terms), and I started typing sn into the box, and all was fine, but when I hit ä I did get a selection, but not the expected one (an Expression with an accented é IIRC). Backing up to sn and scrolling down the Expression I was looking for was there, and I could select it fine. I have not yet tested this in other situations. --Sannab 11:02, 14 June 2006 (CEST)

Editing Problem with some browsers[edit]

When editing, adding or altering a definition to a DefinedMeaning is factually inhibited by the corresponding field being shown with zero width by Opera (all tested versions up to 9.0=current) and IE5, IE5.5 (some other editing fields behave identical), under WinME and Win2K --Purodha Blissenbach 13:39, 18 July 2006 (CEST), Purodha Blissenbach 14:29, 19 July 2006 (CEST)

Disambiguating Expressions when setting Relations[edit]

Currently when defining a new Relation, the entry window for the Expression gives you a dropdown list containing all Relations that match the string you have entered so far. If there are multiple instances of a given Spelling in the database, this spelling will occur multiple times, with no way to disambiguate between them; which leads to inability to correctly create the Relation.

Both the Language and the Definition associated with the Spelling needs to be available. Possibly a popup window on hovering could be used.

Benefit[edit]

Removes a serious flaw with the current Relation definition interface, and enables the creation of correct Relations when there are multiple instances of a given Spelling --Sannab 10:22, 19 July 2006 (CEST)

The next release will show both the language and definition for a defined meaning in the 'Other defined meaning' drop down. For the moment, the definition will be given in English. --PeterJanRoes 11:19, 20 July 2006 (CEST)

Cannot add language[edit]

I created the page Expression:Aalborg using the [Create Expression] button in the Search results page. I added Language Engish, gave it a DM in English and German, added few synonyms and translations to various languages, then, after the last [Save] selected another language from the bex next to + Add language, and [Save] came up with no language added. Repeat. This is the URL I had after the futile [Save]: http://wiktionaryz.org/index.php?action=edit&preload=&editintro=&title=Expression%3AAalborg&create=Create+expression (Opera 9.0 under Win2K) -- Purodha Blissenbach 08:35, 24 July 2006 (CEST)

I do not completely understand the problem you describe. For which language did you try to add a new defined meaning? Are you aware that the box next to '+ Add language' adds a completely new defined meaning (you should specify a definition by expanding the '+ Add language' node)? Inspecting the page Expression:Aalborg I saw something peculiar. It looks like there are different defined meanings created for the different languages. Is this intentional? Ideally I think we would have one defined meaning for the town (so only one definition with its translations) and multiple expressions in different languages attached to that defined meaning as synonyms and translations. PeterJanRoes 11:34, 24 July 2006 (CEST)
The different DMs were temporary due to a copy&paste error. I've later seen that I have to klick the + in front of "new language" to get the thing working. So it is entirely up to me struggling with a not too intuitive (to me) property of the UI. Possibly something to keep in mind when it comes to ergonomic streamelining later, done with for now. -- Purodha Blissenbach 17:38, 24 July 2006 (CEST)

DM deletion database bug[edit]

After somehow creating a duplicate Italian DM for topo as well as an erroneous English DM for the same, I cannot delete them. This is the error text I see:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:
DELETE tc, t FROM translated_content AS tc, text AS t WHERE tc.set_id=6145 AND tc.language_id=85 AND tc.is_latest_set=1 AND tc.text_id=t.old_id
from within function "". MySQL returned error "1066: Not unique table/alias: 'tc' (localhost)".

Same problem with Expression:chin: I can't delete the French. That's just a missing feature I think. Kipcool 09:00, 25 July 2006 (CEST)
I don't know whether you need another example, but if so, I get the same error when attempting to delete the only defined meaning for a duplicate sense of a mistaken DefinedMeaning for the expression spa:"mind".
DELETE tc, t FROM translated_content AS tc, text AS t WHERE tc.set_id=6219 AND tc.language_id=87 AND tc.is_latest_set=1 AND tc.text_id=t.old_id
I will add an "Attention" template to the expression's talk page. Rod A. Smith 21:36, 25 July 2006 (CEST)
I've also been replacing the text of DMs I want deleted to "error. please delete." etc. — Hippietrail 03:49, 28 July 2006 (CEST)
The database error should not occur anymore when removing definitions. The defined meaning itself cannot removed however. But leaving the defined meaning entirely empty (no definition etc.) should make it easy to remove it at a later stage automatically. --PeterJanRoes 13:12, 10 August 2006 (CEST)

new DM doesn't appear[edit]

I did the following:

  1. create Expression:sneaker
  2. add Expression:basket as a French translations of sneaker
  3. create Expression:basketball
  4. add Expression:basket as a French translations of basketball

Now, if you look the French Expression:basket, only the first meaning (sneaker) appears, the second is not here, even though the translation "basket" appears in Expression:basketball. What's wrong? Kipcool

ok, never mind, it just needed time to refresh. Kipcool 10:26, 25 July 2006 (CEST)

Edit conflict lead to loss of Definition[edit]

Today when editing queen it seems there was an edit conflict between Siebrand and myself. At least the history shows edits at around the same time. The result seems to have been that my (I saved last) changes all got in, Siebrand's Expressions seems to have been correctly added (I think...), but Siebrand's Dutch Definitions all ended up empty...--Sannab 16:41, 21 July 2006 (CEST)

This is a direct result of not having versioning. It is sadly a feature not a bug. GerardM 17:06, 21 July 2006 (CEST)
As a result, we have left a notice at the top of Special:Recentchanges showing the Code of Conduct until it's fixed. Regards, —Celestianpower Háblame 18:32, 21 July 2006 (CEST)
This particular edit conflict has been solved (available in the next release, tomorrow), that is, two users adding new definitions at the same time should not be a problem if the definitions are in different languages. However, other edit conflicts can still arise without versioning. For instance, updating the same definition in the same language simultaneously by two users can result in the changes of one person being lost. My recommendation would be to apply small changes in a short period of time to minimize these edit conflicts: the longer the period between the time of opening an edit form and the time of saving it, the greater the risk of running into editing conflicts. Of course, following the above mentioned Code of Conduct avoids edit conflicts too. PeterJanRoes 17:47, 22 July 2006 (CEST)

Duplicated DMs[edit]

See Expression:Kölsch. I had edited DMs of several languages, wanted to save them in one go. Result of clicking [Save] was DMs duplicated between languages. These cannot be deleted:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:
DELETE tc, t FROM translated_content AS tc, text AS t WHERE tc.set_id=6111 AND tc.language_id=85 AND tc.is_latest_set=1 AND tc.text_id=t.old_id

It seems they can be edited at times but not always, I've not tried to find out when. -- Purodha Blissenbach 23:19, 24 July 2006 (CEST)

possible source[edit]

It appears to me that, when you have several already existing DMs from several languages clicked open during a [Save], and you have added translations to them, they are not updated but rather added (once more). Or viewed from a versioning standpoint, new versions do not replace older version. Or again in other words, obsolete old versions are not deleted.

So you end up with several different versions of the same, one version for each attempted change or addition. See http://wiktionaryz.org/Expression:I for a recent example. --Purodha Blissenbach 15:25, 27 July 2006 (CEST)

With all languages closed, you [Save] and get duplications as well. Possibly the DM of the last language you edited is added to ?which?. English in this case. See Expression_talk:George_W._Bush --Purodha Blissenbach 20:53, 27 July 2006 (CEST)
I am not sure whether I understand when the problem arises. The database deletion bug should have been solved now however, that is, no weird database error should appear anymore. However, at this moment it is not possible to delete defined meanings, but it is possible to remove (the translations of) the definition. About the defined meaning duplication. Opening or closing defined meanings should indeed have no effect on this behavior. Are you sure you add the translations of the definition and the expression to an existing defined meaning? Or do you use the input fields at the very bottom of the edit page to enter a language for the expression, a language for the definition and the definition itself? --PeterJanRoes 13:02, 10 August 2006 (CEST)

Just stumbled in a similar problem with a duplicate DM - see Expression_talk:particella. -- Sergio.ballestrero 01:19, 31 July 2006 (CEST)

The database error should not occur anymore when removing definitions. The defined meaning itself cannot removed however. But leaving the defined meaning entirely empty (no definition etc.) should make it easy to remove it at a later stage automatically. --PeterJanRoes 13:09, 10 August 2006 (CEST)

"Main Page" link always leads to English page[edit]

And I found out that there's the same problem with other languages' interfaces. Please correct it some way.

And also please change the menu name "partners" for Russian "партнёры". --Shakura 12:27, 13 August 2006 (CEST)

Maybe I'm too stupid or smth, but I still can't find the way to do it. ))) --Shakura 13:52, 13 August 2006 (CEST)
You can change it in the MediaWiki namespace, more specifically in MediaWiki:Sidebar/ru. However, I looks like there is a MediaWiki patch in place so that this page is not used here. Hence: tough luck for now... Siebrand 14:12, 13 August 2006 (CEST)
You should imho be able to change it in MediaWiki:Mainpage-url/ru for the main page name (does not seem to work, not even with tweaking), and in MediaWiki:Partners/ru for the "partners" / "партнёры" title (works now).
Got the "main page" link fixed, too, with a redirect: Development wiki:Main Page/ruDevelopment wiki:Main Page/rus
As to MediaWiki:Sidebar, there is one level of indirection there. All there is given in MediaWiki:Sidebar, are names of pages in the MediaWiki name space. The 1st character may be converted to lower case. So the entry * partners and entry * Partners originally look up MediaWiki:Partners (but not MediaWiki:partners, even if it exists) and display what is stored there. If such an entry is not found, which is an error, the original text is shown unaltered, which btw. likely yields wrong xhtml. When it comes to a different language, and the wiki is multilingual, the lookup-process in the MediaWiki name space sometimes looks for the current-language subpage first, before it tries the language-less page name. If such a page, e.g. MediaWiki:Partners/ru is found, its content is used. Sometimes means, this is not done for the xxx-url names, thus MediaWiki:Mainpage-url/ru is ignored for whatever reason. This may be a bug in Mediawiki, or may be not. -- Purodha Blissenbach 12:02, 17 August 2006 (CEST)

History[edit]

On the new history (thanks) the changes of the current expression are not shown. For instance ne_pas history is not shown as on not history:

Deleted expresion as prefered translation of a DM?[edit]

I wanted to add Expression:element of group I as a relation to Expression:hydrogen but it generates the empty expression Expression:element of group I (alkaline) instead. That was probably a previous translation of the DM, deleted on 20 August. With Dutch as UI langauge it looks fine, probably because the Dutch translation was not deleted. Is this happening with more relations????? HenkvD 14:01, 17 September 2006 (CEST)

Solved. This is not relevant anymore since, the last release, as relations links now to DM's instead of expressions. HenkvD 19:58, 1 October 2006 (CEST)

Dutch DM's?[edit]

Defined meanings should have one page per DM but I noticed there are different pages per language on the relation links: DefinedMeaning:chemie (567) and DefinedMeaning:chemistry (567). The English DM has a blue article page and the dutch is red. With prefered language nl-Nederlands the Relations will link to the red DefinedMeaning:chemie (567). See fore example theme Chemistry on Expression:oxygen.

I think this is a small programming error: [[nl (123)|en]] instead of [[en (123)|nl]]. HenkvD 22:05, 29 September 2006 (CEST)

The same applies to the relation type, and the incoming relations. HenkvD 22:06, 29 September 2006 (CEST)

Bulgarian themes[edit]

I noticed there are a lot of themes that are not in English but in Bulgarian. I think this is caused during conversion from the GEMET site when the Gemet themes contains commas. In that case the Bulgarian translation seems to be used, but only the first part, upto a comma. Also the second part of the expression ends up as an empty word. Very strange.

The results are 1) Bulgarian themes 2) These Bulgarian expressions have no DefinedMeanings and no translations. Is there a way to correct this? HenkvD 20:58, 8 May 2006 (CEST)

Perhaps this should be moved to the Insect room, sure sounds as a bug, albeit an import bug to me? --Sannab 22:48, 8 May 2006 (CEST)
OK I moved it from the International Beer Parlour. HenkvD 23:21, 8 May 2006 (CEST)

After the upgrade on 14/7 it is now possible to create new DM's, so I created Expression:disasters, accidents, risk. It now truns out that all expressions formerly related to it (like accident) are now shown as

Relation type - Other defined meaning
is part of theme Expression:

so without a link to the a DM or expression. Could this be fixed???? HenkvD 17:03, 16 July 2006 (CEST)

Yesterday and today I managed to correct these bulgarian themes. I did this by updating the original DM, adding the translations and removing the incorrect bulgarian translation. I could not find a definition so I simply added Theme from GEMET. HenkvD 17:10, 30 July 2006 (CEST)

This problem of Bulgarian themes appears to happen with all other languages too. For every theme 2 or 3 empty DM's per language seem to have been created. Most of them have to be deleted.

Umlauts aren't displayed correctly[edit]

Umlauts (ä, ö, ü) aren't displayed correctly when they're generated automatically; e.g. "Dänisch" or "Französisch". You've got the problem only if the text comes from the software, if you type it yourself, everything looks fine. Greetings --Pill 19:57, 3 May 2006 (CEST)

Addition: This happens when the user interface language is set to German. Also, "Slowakische Sprache" is given as translation for "Slovak". It should be "Slowakisch". --Tosca 18:04, 8 May 2006 (CEST)
Is fixed, thanks. greetings Pill δ 13:56, 28 August 2006 (CEST)

Deleted definitions shown[edit]

(This has been verbatim copied from the International Beer Parlour)

  • In Expression:fabriek for example, I've deleted/renamed the names with parentheses (French and English for examples), but what I see in French in the expandable line is "établissement industriel (bâtiment): Buildings where the operations related to industrial productive processes a..." whereas it should be "établissement industriel" without the parenthesis.
  • I've tried removing DefinedMeaning pages that correspond to no expression: DefinedMeaning:Aabenraa (6194), DefinedMeaning:Aabenraa (6197) DefinedMeaning:Aabenraa (6198). Now, it doesn't appear in Allpages anymore, but it doesn't seem that the data itself has been deleted, we can still see the definitions. So, are we supposed to delete them? Kipcool 16:42, 28 September 2006 (CEST)
I guess, since deletions are made by flagging records as deleted, that the "deleted"-flag should be included in the data base query looking for the first definition. → Insect room. --Purodha Blissenbach 17:51, 28 September 2006 (CEST)
OmegaWiki and DefinedMeanings are database enties. They should be deleted via the edit button. If the page still appears (as it will do with the current software) the page could be deleted afterwards. Don't try to delete (or move) a database entry either. HenkvD 21:29, 29 September 2006 (CEST)

I cannot add a word[edit]

I want to add the word "innovatie" as a translation to the word "innovation". I get a database error. GerardM 23:57, 15 August 2006 (CEST)

Expression:innovatie is a deleted page. This is a known bug, see #Expressions can't be re-entered after they have been deleted . DM is about small country in the Middle East???? I will clear that as much as possible. HenkvD 23:29, 19 August 2006 (CEST)
I just managed ot ass "innovatie". The link was still red, si I restored it. Now it is OK. The update ot the softwar probably made this possible. HenkvD 20:46, 8 September 2006 (CEST)

Changing DMs behaves counter-intuitive[edit]

Expression:Tautropfen DM1 and Expression:dewdrop DM1 are linked to each other as translation having 'identical meaning' switched off. Changing the DM of Expression:Tautropfen to be more consisten wih the German meaning of deu:'Tautropfen' alters the DM of Expression:dewdrop as well. Since the meanings are explicitly flagged non-identical, such UI behaviour seems not very intuitive.

Worse, then an alternate DM was entered for Expression:Tautropfen which was an exact copy of the altered DM1, and with the same edit, the DM1 changed back to the former original. Now this time, the associated DM1 in Expression:dewdrop was not altered together with the DM1 of Expression:Tautropfen, remaning at the previously altered state. This appears even less intuitive.

Possible solution: whenever an existing DM or alternate DM is about to be changed and there is at least 1 other expression linked to that DM, offer a selection: change associated DMs?: No | All | Select. With Select, list all the linked Expressions as [ ] language:expression, and have the user select per checkbox, which ones to alter. I know that this description is from a UI-users view and does not reflect data base reality :-) -- Purodha Blissenbach 23:19, 10 August 2006 (CEST)

When Tautrophen does not fit the defintion. It should get a new DM. This is done by creating a new DM and turning the "identical meaning" flag off. This can only be done (at this moment) from a translation like dauwdruppel. GerardM 11:11, 11 August 2006 (CEST)

As far as I can see all translation of Expression:Tautropfen should have 'identical meaning' switched on, which is now the case!. HenkvD 11:15, 11 August 2006 (CEST)

it is possible to create entries with empty language information[edit]

Since the latest update, it is possible to create entries (DMs and expressions) with no information in the language box. In these cases there should be an error message stating something like "please select a language". Entries without language information clog up the database. --Mkill 02:32, 10 August 2006 (CEST)

In the next update blank language fields will be ignored and won't be added to the database. Error messages are very important but will be added at a later stage. Is it possible to remove the incorrectly added entries through the user interface or are there entries that need extra attention? --PeterJanRoes 10:32, 10 August 2006 (CEST)
Checking the remove box and clicking save will remove all traces of the Definition without a language from the DM. I do not know if that means it is out of the database though... It is also possible to remove the Expressions, and delete them. However, when recreating an Expression with the language param set (that is after first having deleted the Expression without a language param), the resulting Expression page listed both the non-language Expression and the Swedish language Expression (and stupid me forgot to make a mark of which Expression it was, I will search and report back if I find it....) --Sannab 10:37, 10 August 2006 (CEST)
  • Resolved. No longer possible. Siebrand 17:55, 18 October 2006 (CEST)

Missing Site notice(?) with German interface language[edit]

When the interface language is set to German, the helpful "User Interface Language :‎ ar arc de dv en eo es fa fr (ha) he ks (ku) (pa) ps ro ru sr sd (tk) ug ur yi zh Please help us by working on these 1000 basic words" is not shown any more. -- Purodha Blissenbach 18:30, 21 July 2006 (CEST)

Site notices could be setup in each language seperately, as any other system message. See for instance MediaWiki:Sitenotice/nl MediaWiki:Sitenotice/de. The MediaWiki:Sitenotice/en is using a default, probably setup on the TestWiki. Probably on the testwiki all languages should be setup as well. HenkvD 12:23, 11 August 2006 (CEST)

Preprocessing of GEMET (feature request)[edit]

A wish that I most clearly understand might be very far down on the feasibility scale would be a preprocessing of the data imported from GEMET.

Such a preprocessing should then divide up the series of synonyms given as translations of a given DefinedMeaning (see f ex http://epov.org/wd-gemet/index.php/Expression:marktextur%3B_marktyp%3B_jordart). AFAICT GEMET is quite consistent in using semi-colons to separate such synonyms.

Another change that I am less certain on the consistency of is the various DefinedMeanings that have more than one part; f ex 1) Refers to the relative proportions of the various size groups (sand, silt and clay) of the individual soil grains in a mass of soil. 2) Classification of soil by the proportion and graduations of the three size groups of soil grains, i.e., sand, silt and clay, present in the soil. (Source: LANDY). It would be nice if these were divided up into two DefinedMeanings. --Sannab 15:03, 2 May 2006 (CEST)

Gemmet is not consistent at all, see the examples below. Preprocessing would need to cater for all kinds of cases. HenkvD 14:26, 3 May 2006 (CEST)
Lists of expressions:
Disamibiguity pages
The GEMET content does have its issues. Now how do you think we can solve this ? Please appreciate Gemet for what it is. It is suberb material, the quality is great and it allow us to demonstrate what OmegaWiki is about. GerardM 14:53, 3 May 2006 (CEST)
My point is that the Gemet data if fine, but not perfect, and that a list of expressions is not defined at a consistent way. It can be by using ;,/ or numbers or even both numebers and commas. This is very hard to correct in pre-prcessing. HenkvD 21:40, 3 May 2006 (CEST)
Maybe it would be possible to replace the [ ] by ( ) to prevent broken codes. HenkvD 21:40, 3 May 2006 (CEST)
At this moment we can only do more translations and synonymes but a next step would be to work on relations.. That is really powerful stuff. Stuff that we have not been able to do at all. GerardM 14:53, 3 May 2006 (CEST)

Cannot add translation/synonyme[edit]

In Expression:Kölsch, I want to add a synonyme/translation deu:"Koelsch" to all lanuages DMs (that are having good descriptions) - I get:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:
insert into uw_syntrans(set_id,defined_meaning_id,expression_id,first_set,revision_id,endemic_meaning,is_latest_set) values(6315, 6315, 117568, 6315, , 1, 1)
from within function "". MySQL returned error "1064: You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ' 1, 1)' at line 1 (localhost)".

-- Purodha Blissenbach 00:41, 25 July 2006 (CEST)

Purodha, "Koelsch" is not a valid German expression. I deleted it earlier on, maybe that's why it cannot be added now. --Tosca 00:57, 25 July 2006 (CEST)
Of course it is a valid expression. Every single Ö,ö,Ä,ä,Ü,ü,ß according to several authorities can be replaced by Oe(OE),oe,Ae(AE),ae,Ue(UE),ue,ss, if the others are not availabe. At times, e.g. in e-mails or chats, people tend to replace them even if there is no real need. They are spelling variants, that need to be marked with an attribute like: "not to be used if avoidable" and a relation to the Umlaut variant saying: "use this if possible"
Possibly your earlier deletion is the factual cause that let the problem show, but the problem itself is a syntax error in an SQL statement. Undoubtedly there must be a way to re-enter accidentally deleted translations. -- Purodha Blissenbach 09:06, 27 July 2006 (CEST)
I don't think ae/oe/ue/ss replacements should be added right now. These can be added later, when it is possible to mark them as "variant spellings in case of font restrictions". At the moment, these will only clog the database. Btw., when will Swiss German be added as a language? (they don't use ß and write ss instead) --Mkill 15:49, 30 July 2006 (CEST)
I'm not foolish enough to add more than an occasional test sample of data that I know can later be had with an automatic process doing the whole bulk. Swiss Spelling of Standard German (which almost all of Swiss literature uses) has very little to do with 'Swiss German', ISO code gsw, a quite diverse group of Allemannic languages (used in everyday oral communicaton in big parts of Switzerland) -- Purodha Blissenbach 19:48, 31 July 2006 (CEST)
As you said, using oe for ö and so on is only a makeshift solution if the correct Umlauts are not available. They are not linguistically correct spellings and should not be added as synonyms or spelling variants. They are rather a kind of transliteration and could maybe be stored as such. Adding Swiss spellings on the other hand is useful, because they are correct spellings in Switzerland. --Tosca 21:47, 31 July 2006 (CEST)

German UI doe not 'know' several languages[edit]

This should possibly go to Functionality wanted. Feel free to move.

When the user interface language is set to German, several language names at various places are not shown, fields are left blank. E.g. Arabic (Standard), Serbian either script, Akan, and several more.

For example Japanese is shown with the UI language set to English, not shown in German, although both Expression:Japanisch and Expression:Japanese exist, both are linked together, and both are into the ISO 639-3 collection as jpn. Thus data for the language names must likely be missing elsewhere. --Purodha Blissenbach 10:39, 1 September 2006 (CEST)

This is a bug.. Erik has added the German names for some languages to the UI German.. I think he did not do this for the later languages. GerardM 13:53, 1 September 2006 (CEST)

Duplicated languages[edit]

Most likely this has already been reported but here it goes: some languages appear duplicated but in different languages. For example, Portuguese and Portugiesisch both appear in the combo for language selection. Malafaya 16:56, 11 August 2006 (CEST)

This is not a bug, it is a feature. Choose any of the option and it will be connected to the correct language code. Siebrand 14:03, 13 August 2006 (CEST)
is there a chance to add ISO codes to the list so as to speed up data entry a bit? -- Purodha Blissenbach 20:09, 13 August 2006 (CEST)

This is a bug when Slovak is your UI language .. What you see is the word that was originally there. Fist there was Nemec this was wrong and deleted, but the DefinedMeaning still has the old word associated with it .. This is wrong and indeed needs fixing.. GerardM 20:44, 16 October 2006 (CEST)

But after deletion of the syn I still see "Rolle" as DM-lemma (only with "deu" as user language, of course). Clicking on it I reach DefinedMeaning:katrol_(156012), where "Rolle" is also not longer there. What could the reason for that be? *helpless* --Thogo (Talk) 21:25, 17 October 2006 (CEST)

Character encoding problem[edit]

With Opera 9.0 under Win2K and interface langage German, there is a character encoding problem, possibly a double conversion to Unicode, the drop down list of languages says "Niederländisch" and "Französisch" and so does the list, once data has been saved. All other Umlauts are rendered correctly. -- Purodha Blissenbach 18:30, 21 July 2006 (CEST) Headlines showing language names have the problem, too. -- Purodha Blissenbach 23:34, 21 July 2006 (CEST)

Can we make editing faster?[edit]

Editing became slower and slower over time, as functionality, and number of languages, and editors, grew. With the server switch is became a bit better by average, but is varying a whole lot. Editing remains a task which I can only perform parallel to something else, since waiting times are just unbearable otherwise. Worst is waiting for language drop downs. Neddless to display more than the few languages I use (most of the time) and I also think, caching the language list, or possibly other data, locally might increase speed. If that already happens, then what the hell is taking so much time? I am using Opera, DSL, a pretty average computer which is not very new. --Purodha Blissenbach 10:00, 17 December 2006 (EST)

  • What ever the cause, since some days before christmas, editing speed considerably increased, even with pages having pretty large lists. So, I call the above part of history. --Purodha Blissenbach 09:58, 25 December 2006 (EST)
