One more language wanted for translation[edit]

I would like to enter ksh translations while I'm at it, and not have to edit each entry once more again. (Possibly this should go in the insect room?) Swadesh List see Swadesh lists for Germanic languages, column "Kölsch" -- Purodha Blissenbach 04:05, 21 July 2006 (CEST)

Sort DefinedMeanings by Identical Match[edit]

It would be preferable if the DefinedMeanings that have the Identical Match-flag set to true to precede the DefinedMeanings that has it set to false.

Benefit[edit]

The "best" definitions of a given Expression would get higher priority.--Sannab 12:33, 21 July 2006 (CEST)

On a closer thought, there should be three "levels". Any DM that the Expression in question is a first Expression for should imo come at the absolute top. Followed by identical matches, and non-identical matches in the end. --Sannab 14:07, 4 August 2006 (CEST)

show French DMs for French words[edit]

For example, for Expression:basket, I'd like to see the French definitions when the word is in French (and when the definition exists in French), and the English def when it is in English. Or maybe just see everything in French, since it's my user interface language preference. Kipcool 10:22, 27 July 2006 (CEST)

ok, we now have it, vielen Dank ! Kipcool 13:50, 28 July 2006 (CEST)

Show "identical meaning" flag with currently selected expression[edit]

At the moment, Expression:карман брюк shows two DMs, one of which is having the "identical meaning" flag set, the other does not. It is bewildering that we cannot see that. -- Purodha Blissenbach 11:09, 23 August 2006 (CEST)

Absolutely !! GerardM 09:59, 4 September 2006 (CEST)
Thanks a lot to those who made it. We have that functionality now! A new headline for – Exact meanings and – Approximate meanings representing the "identical meaning" flag groups DMs on every relatinal data page. --Purodha Blissenbach

Translation[edit]

It would help if we had a screen where you can indicate a language and a second language where there are no translations of terms in the first language. This will produce a list of DefinedMeanings and one can be chosen for editing

Benefit[edit]

It will add translations and it will prevent the creation of DefinedMeanings where one already exists. It will help people to find things to do.

This functionality is available since 11/9 with for example http://OmegaWiki.org/NeedsTranslationTo:Dutch&source-language=French This looks for words in French that do not have a translation in Dutch.. It Shows only a maximum of 100 expressions. It does not have a starting place yet.. but it is really nice.
Since some time there is a starting page at: Special:NeedsTranslation

Example sentences ![edit]

Nothing is more important in a multilingual environment than having clear and unambiguous DefinedMeanings. However, there are few professional lexicographers around here, if any, and the majority of people claim they don't excel in writing definitions. Fair enough, no big deal, but unclear definitions can mess up entire pages. Example sentences to go with each definition, and which should be translated as much as each definition gets translated, should form a major help in determining which meaning a certain DM actually has. — Vildricianus 11:29, 26 July 2006 (CEST)

I strongly support this, preferably a variable number of example sentences, but just a single one would be much better than the current state of affairs. Furthermore I think we should directly aim to have authentic examples rather than constructed examples.--Sannab 11:32, 26 July 2006 (CEST)
Until we have them, a simple Link opening Google/Yahoo/... search results in a separate window for Expressions+language and translations+language might be saving time.
Otherwise, I've split feelings about sample sentences. For the uses of WZ usually on my mind, I'd rather put them on talk pages, but that may be a narrow pov. -- Purodha Blissenbach 09:18, 27 July 2006 (CEST)
About the very nature of these sentences I'm not sure. The one important thing is that they be clearly illustrating what a DefinedMeaning actually defines. It seems there will be need for many more DefinedMeanings for a term than there would be for traditional definitions in a monolingual dictionary. Each subtle difference would be much clearer if supported by an example. — Vildricianus 11:03, 27 July 2006 (CEST)
To my understanding samples cannot be associated directly with DMs. The can go with language+spelling+DefinedMeaning, and they need to be consistently spelt, e.g. deu:"Die Thüren zur Schifffahrt ..." would be wrongly mixing two spellings that never coexisted in history, in fact for 97 years neither was correct. Thus, they're also automatically availabe with syn/trans. -- Purodha Blissenbach 20:26, 27 July 2006 (CEST)
I strongly wish for this feature, too. --Mkill 17:05, 30 July 2006 (CEST)
Yes, me too. It's very important and useful in finding out the way a word is used. I might even go so far as to say integral. —Celestianpower Háblame 22:48, 4 August 2006 (CEST)

No language selected at default[edit]

I don't know how often this already happened, maybe you had this too: I entered an explanation or a translation and forgot to change the language away from english. I would be a very handy feature if there was no language selected by default, so you don't inadvertedly add something in the wrong language. (Of course, there would have to be a routine that displays a "please select a language" message if you click on "save" without selecting something. --Mkill 23:41, 31 July 2006 (CEST)

Yes, that would be incredibly useful. I've done it countless times, and it's really annoying. —Celestianpower Háblame 14:41, 4 August 2006 (CEST)
I second this request, and I would like to add that the drop-down for definition's language should not offer the languages for which the Definition exists already. -- Sergio.ballestrero 12:02, 6 August 2006 (CEST)

Clickable headers for column sorting[edit]

It would be neat, could we click the column headlines like Language, Spelling, Text, etc. of lists of relational data, so as to make a local javascript sort them alphabecically (round robin: ASC → DESC → UNSORT → ASC …). This would help us detect forgotten or misspelled entries, and compare related lists of syntrans' more easily. --Purodha Blissenbach 14:11, 13 September 2006 (CEST)

Empty sections suppressed in browse mode[edit]

It would improve the friendliness of the interface extremely if sections that are empty (that is has nothing to expand to when clicking the plus-sign) do not even show the heading in non-edit mode. In edit mode they of course need to be there so that content may be added to them.
